What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of people aged 12 or older who had at least one drink of alcohol during the month prior to the survey. |
| Why this is important: Alcohol is the most commonly used substance in the United States. Nationally, about half of Americans aged 12 or older reported past month use of alcohol in 2006-2008. According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking at a young age are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. Alcohol use also impairs judgment and can lead to other high-risk behaviors such as drunk driving and sexual activity. |
