Illicit Drug Use

Value: 6.2 percent
Measurement
Period:
2008-2010
Location: County : Montgomery
Comparison: MD State Value
Categories: Health / Substance Abuse
What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of people aged 12 or older who used an illicit drug in the month preceding the survey. Illicit drugs include marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, or prescription-type drugs used nonmedically.
Why this is important:
Illicit drug use refers to the use and misuse of illegal or controlled drugs. Though there has been a long-term decrease in overall use, many people in the United states still use illicit drugs. Use of illicit drugs is highest among young people, aged 15-25 years. Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug. Drug dependence is a chronic, relapsing disorder which often results in self-destructive and criminal behavior. Illegal use of drugs is also associated with injury, illness, high-risk sexual activity, disability, death, domestic violence, crime, school truancy, and lost workplace productivity. The stigma attached with substance abuse increases the severity of the problem.
Technical Note:  The regional value is compared to the Maryland state value.
