Nonmedical Use of Pain Relievers

Value: 3.3 percent
Measurement
Period:
2008-2010
Location: County : Montgomery
Comparison: MD State Value
Categories: Health / Substance Abuse
What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percent of people aged 12 or older who used pain relievers for nonmedical reasons in the year preceding the survey.
Why this is important:
Nonmedical use of pain killers is defined as the use of prescription drugs which have not been prescribed by a physician, are used in a manner or dosage other than what was prescribed, or are used only for the experience or feeling they cause. Nonmedical use does not include over-the-counter drugs. When prescription pain relievers are abused they can produce serious adverse health effects, including addiction. Drug dependence is a chronic, relapsing disorder which often results in self-destructive and criminal behavior. Among illicit drugs, the number of people abusing prescription pain relievers is second only to the number of people using marijuana.
Technical Note:  The regional value is compared to the Maryland state value.
