What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to motor vehicle crashes. |
| Why this is important: Motor vehicle-related injuries kill more children and young adults than any other single cause in the United States. More than 41,000 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes each year, and crash injuries result in about 500,000 hospitalizations and four million emergency department visits annually. Increased use of safety belts and reductions in driving while impaired are two of the most effective means to reduce the risk of death and serious injury of occupants in motor vehicle crashes. The Healthy People 2020 national health target is to reduce the motor vehicle collision death rate to 12.4 deaths per 100,000 population. |
| Technical Note: The regional value is compared to the Maryland state value. |
