What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of youth ages 12 to 17 who had at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year. |
| Why this is important: Major depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States. It is the cause of more than two-thirds of suicides every year. In 2007, approximately 2.0 million youths aged 12 to 17 experienced at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year. However, only 40% of them received treatment. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), MDE is defined as a period of at least 2 weeks when a person experiences a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities and has a at least four other symptoms that interfere with functioning such as problems with sleep, eating, energy, concentration, and self-image. Treatment options for MDE include psychotherapy and medication, among others. The Healthy People 2020 national health target is to reduce the proportion of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years who experience a major depressive episode (MDE) to 7.4% |
| Technical Note: The regional value is compared to the Maryland state value. |
