What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the number of pedestrians killed in traffic collisions per 100,000 population. |
| Why this is important: In 2008, 4,378 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. On average, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 120 minutes and injured in a traffic crash every 8 minutes. There were 69,000 pedestrians injured in traffic crashes in 2008 in the United States. In 2008, one-fifth (20%) of all children between the ages of 5 and 9 who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians. The Healthy People 2020 national health target is to reduce the pedestrian death rate to 1.3 deaths per 100,000 population. |
