| Description |
The Standing Rock Indian Reservation Women's and Men's Cancer Screening Program provides cancer screening and education for women 20 and older and men 40 and older. The program's initial focus was breast and cervical cancer screening for the 2500 women aged 20 and older residing on the reservation. In 2003 men's cancer screening for the 1034 men aged 40 and older living on the reservation was added following community request. To encourage participation the program organizes special screening events where gifts and food are provided for the participants. |

The goal of this screening program is to increase cancer education and screening among men and women of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. |
| Results / Accomplishments |
In 2003, 737 women received breast and cervical cancer screening, compared to 475 prior to the program inception in 1997. In 2003-2004, 147 men receiving colorectal and prostate cancer screenings, compared to 37 men were screened in 2001-2002 before program inception. Prior to program implementation, there was little consistency with yearly cancer screening for women. This has improved significantly as there is now a greater than 50% return rate for annual screening. The men's program increased screening from less than 1% to 14% within the first year. |
