Description Para Su Salud is a community benefit program of California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC). It was established in 2002 in order to increase access to health care for low-income, uninsured families living in CHMC’s service area. The program utilizes six bilingual (English and Spanish) Community Health Access Specialists (CHAS) who provide low-cost insurance information and counseling to low-income, uninsured families. CHAS conduct enrollment activities in community hospitals, clinics, health fairs, and other community organizations. CHAS also perform enrollment follow-up, troubleshooting, redetermination assistance, and retention contacts/verification.

The 2008 program goals were as follows: perform outreach to 7,500 of the target population; complete healthcare program applications for 3,500 clients; investigate enrollment status within three months of application completion date for 100% of clients; confirm enrollment for 75% of client applications; provide ongoing assistance to 2,500 clients; offer redetermination assistance to 75% of clients; and maintain a 75% retention rate for clients with confirmed enrollment.

This program is funded by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services through its Children’s Health Outreach Initiative (CHOI).
Goal / Mission The program’s goal is to increase access to health care by assisting children and their families in Los Angeles County to enroll in health coverage programs and utilize and retain these benefits.
Results / Accomplishments In 2008, the Para Su Salud program successfully completed applications for 4,629 clients, 85.43% of whom achieved confirmed enrollment. Staff investigated enrollment status within three months of application completion date for 100% of clients and provided ongoing assistance to 2,102 existing clients. Staff attempted to offer redetermination assistance to 95.89% of clients-- 82.92% were successfully contacted and 80.96% were still enrolled at 11-12 months.
