| Description |
The goal of Modelo de Intervencion Psicomedica is to reduce high-risk behaviors that can lead to infection and transmission of HIV among intravenous drug users. This program targets Hispanic adults.
Program participants attended six one-on-one counseling sessions during which motivational interviewing strategies were implemented. These sessions addressed goal setting, decision-making, reinforcement, self-monitoring, and attitude change and were conducted by a registered nurse that had received intensive training.
Also, participants worked with a case manager who helped them address any problems that could interfere with their participation in the program and in accessing drug treatment, primary health care services, housing, social welfare, and/or legal assistance.

| Results / Accomplishments |
One study conducted a 6-month follow-up with the intervention and control groups. The authors found that subjects in the intervention group were significantly more likely to enter drug treatment (p<0.002) and significantly less likely to continue drug injection (p<0.012). In addition, among those who continued to inject, subjects in the intervention group were significantly less likely to share needles (p<0.042). |
