| Description |
Founded by cast members of HBO's series "The Wire", ReWired for Change focuses on reaching the youth and families whose plight was depicted in the show. The ReWired for Life! program teaches life skills, violence prevention, and self-esteem building using a three module program. The first module utilizes clips from "The Wire" to engage students in explorations of their life choices and how they impact themselves and their families. Students next examine their communities and the issues facing them. Finally, the program helps participants to put their new knowledge to work within their community through service and finding ways to effect positive change in their world.
Community members are invited to become involved with local youth at The Village House. By utilizing the assets that residents have to offer, this program offers a space where children, youth, adults, and seniors can engage each other in social, cultural, and educational programming to establish a unified, cohesive village. |
| Goal / Mission |
ReWired for Change works to empower at risk youth and families living in under-served communities through education, media and social advocacy, and intergenerational programming. |
| Results / Accomplishments |
The ReWired for Life! Program has engaged youth for two years during its pilot program, and is currently developing relationships with other community organizations to expand its program. The Village House provided homework help, tutoring, art, yoga classes, and an organic gardening and nutrition program in its first year. Local residents have volunteered to form The Village Council, a community member led group that organizes activities. Their first community action, a neighborhood clean-up effort, was held in October 2011. |
